On 15th August 2021, Room to Read has started Reading Campaign 2021 – “ मैं जहाँ, सीखना वहाँ” initiative, in Delhi with the aim to aware parents, caregivers and community members of their crucial role they play for children at home and community.
Sourav Banerjee, Country Director, Room to Read India, said: “Under the Campaign, we are spreading the message that parents can help children learn at home. We are also providing creative solutions for parents to ensure their learning endures. Secondly, we have established community libraries across the capital. Children visit these community libraries frequently and enjoy the enabling learning environment. Thirdly, we are distributing an easy-to-use and understand learning kit to children. The learning kits include the Parents’ handbook, Worksheets, QR coded sheets for audio-visual learning, stationery materials, and other necessary material. Working with Delhi Government and Local Municipalities, we have distributed 13,500 learning kits to children and their families studying in 56 government schools. Within the next month, we will reach out to 36,000 children within a month. We are ensuring that wherever a child resides, the learning never stops.”
Under the Theme of Reading Campaign 2021, Room to Read has established ten community libraries nearby schools. These names are:
- Satimata basti camp Jonapur village, 2. P.G camp CPW Vasant Vihar 3. Indra Kalyan Vihar Okhla Phase1 4. Sagarpur old slum 5. Basti Safderjung enclave 6. Basti Smaypur Badli 7. Basti Shriram JJ camp 8. Community Centre Arjan Nagar, 9. Subhashpark Ambedkar nagar 10. Aya Nagar community centre.
Community volunteers are also taking regular reading sessions with children and issuing books for home. These centers are spreading awareness on Campaign’s objectives like; motivating children to continue their studies, giving information to parents that learning can happen everywhere, and supporting their children in providing a conducive environment of learning at home. RtR Team members are regularly visiting parents from door to door to orient on the use of online and offline learning materials provided by RtR and discuss different issues related to their children’s learning.
RtR team (Library coaches) and teachers are also take online reading sessions in schools period time with children and try to ensure virtual and face-to-face meetings with parents in all schools. In total, 35 reading sessions and 430 home visits have been conducted during this Campaign.
During this Campaign, RtR provided different types of online and offline content to schoolchildren to continue learning at home like; Flipbooks, Read Aloud Videos and Audio Home Based Activity Games for parents to do with their parents.
All efforts are trying to establish the mission statement that “मैं जहाँ सीखना वहाँ” and “नन्हे नन्हें कदम घर पैर सीखेंगे हम”. We can proudly say after seeing the vast responses from children and parents that these efforts are successful in its endeavor. and the Learning Campaign 2021 is going on in full swing, and will continue like this till 8th September.
