Room to Read appeals to India yet again to pledge 15 Minutes of Reading (MOR) time and launches today, its reading campaign #pledgereadingtime, across 9 Indian states- Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, MP, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Through this campaign, RtR emphasizes the joy of reading, especially when the schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and children are at home.

Higher the reading time, the greater the accelerated reading gains. Students who only read for 15 minutes or more a day experience surging improvements in their reading scores. Reading engagement is an important factor that distinguishes between high-performing and low-performing students, regardless of their gender. Children, caregivers, and other community members must pledge a minimum of 15 minutes of reading time while staying at home. Parents can pledge to read aloud a story for half an hour to their children, or you can extend your pledge to read a book to a child in your neighbourhood, keeping social distancing norms in mind.

With support, we can spread the magic of reading in every Indian household and beyond. We believe wherever a child stands, the opportunity of learning follows. During the pandemic, educationists saw pedagogy compromised due to the absence of face-to-face classrooms. Additionally, indirect tutoring also posed a new set of challenges due to the unavailability of digitalized material. The online classes and dissemination of digital learning material for private schools looked like a seamless transition, but government schools struggled, especially those in far-flung areas where Internet and mobile connectivity posed a daunting challenge for government and NGOs

“One way to minimize the learning loss is by providing support through online and offline means during the pandemic and thereafter.  The campaign will also create awareness about the availability of learning material, crucial for parents from an underprivileged background.  Room to Read will focus on education continuity by providing the learning material through a combination of online and offline resources. The teachers will help students by offline and online means in the project areas of Room to Read.  The teachers will give orientation to a few volunteers regarding E-Learning material that may be downloaded and shared with children on a daily basis. The teachers will advise the volunteers on how to help the children in their neighbourhood, keeping in mind social distancing guidelines.  These teachers will also monitor the progress of the children on a regular basis. In some areas, teachers will physically distribute the storybooks and reading cards available in the Room to Read library.” — As quoted by Poornima Garg, Deputy Country Director, Room to Read.
